Reality TV Hits a New Low
As if Jon and Kate Plus 8 wasn’t bad enough in terms of family exploitation, here comes another show to push that envelope. CBS has a new show called There Goes The Neighborhood, which just aired last night. I guess the network station saw how lucrative Jon and Kate was for TLC and decided to create their own televised abomination. If you haven’t heard of this show or seen the trailer, here’s the promotional ad.
What I didn’t understand at first was that these people all knew each other. I originally thought that, like most group reality shows, these people were strangers before meeting up to film in some remote location. Not so. These crazy people were all friends and actually let the network build this ridiculous wall around their actual houses. Maybe you all out there in internet-land caught that right off, but I think I was trying to block that possiblity out. My mind just refused to believe the network would suggest anything so cold-hearted, or that people would be so money hungry as to go along with the crazy suggestion.
So they were all friends when they applied for the TV show. But after weeks of being trapped behind a towering cement wall, and after weeks spent backstabbing each other, will it be possible to remain friends? I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear soon after the show airs its final episode that the former neighbors are just that – former neighbors. If they don’t move away from each other ASAP, at the very least I’m willing to lay down money that these people won’t ever want to talk to each other again.
And of course, don’t even get me started on the fact that most of those families had young children. At least none of these kids will have to watch as their parents go through a bitter divorce on national television. Hopefully.
