Marriage + Children = Disaster?

Jon and Kate have managed to make themselves poster children for quite a few social issues. The conversation du jour? The effects of children on a marriage. Statics do show that more couples with children will tend to eventually divorce. Way to become just one more statistic, Jon and Kate

In light of the seemingly “national tragedy” that is the John & Kate Plus 8 split making headlines from CNN to the Baltimore Sun, I got to thinking about yet another surprisingly unfortunate statistic I learned in college during one of my sociology courses. It stated that couples with children have a higher divorce rate than the national average alone, and also experience lower marital satisfaction than couples without kids. (Don’t shoot the messenger).

In a book I read recently, titled 101 Things I Wish I Knew When I Got Married, authors Linda and Charlie Bloom discuss in one of their chapters the dilemmas that challenge an otherwise healthy marriage, and that is putting your children above all else. This chapter begins with the bold statement: Your primary relationship is with your partner, not your children.

Immediately, my thoughts diverted to the most famous reality couple in America, John and Kate Gosselin, the young parents of twins and sextuplets – eight children in total – who’s infamous split sent shock waves through the family-oriented, TLC-watching community. Sure, it may have been the alleged 23-year-old mistress Jon was seeing, or maybe they did just “grow apart” as was stated in an interview; but if a couple is commonly overwhelmed with the pressure of having one child, imagine eight. Co-Parenting Plans

When couples get a divorce, so often they allow their personal feelings to get in the way of what would be best for their children. One would think that it goes without saying that if the parents could just pull it together in the raising of their children that it’s going to be better for the children. But more often than not, these warring couples disregard, or in some cases use, the children. This is so damaging for these young lives.

Jon and Kate take a break!

We expected a complete end to the show but apparently they want to keep it going.

E Online has this to say about the future of the show:

Jon and Kate Gosselin aren’t the only ones taking a break.

Production on their claim to fame, TLC’s reality hit Jon & Kate Plus 8, is going on hiatus.

Last night’s sixth episode of the 40-ep season featured the couple announcing their separation and plans to live in different cities—a bombshell that attracted a TLC-record 10.6 million viewers.

But despite the huge ratings, the network and the family are “taking some time off to regroup,” according to a TLC statement.

Next Monday’s go-round will be a clip reel of the high- (and low-) lights from the couple’s 10-year marriage, with a few pieces of new footage. The next new episode, however, won’t air until Aug. 3, “and then a modified schedule will be in place to support the family’s transition,” the network says.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the decision came from TLC and not the family. Because of the couple’s faltering marriage, production on each episode thus far had been down to the minute, and word is they simply don’t have enough footage at the moment to create fresh installments.

There’s been no additional comment from the Gosselins today, but the family attempted to maintain some normalcy. Both were actually present at their Pennsylvania home for the first time in recent memory, playing with the kids in the yard. Later, Kate took out her new car around town to run some errands.

Jon looks for apartment

According to TheInsider.com, Jon has started searching for an apartment, apparently ready to move out of the home he shares with Kate.

That makes us think they may attempt a separation instead of divorce. Maybe they’ll give counseling a try?

Jon Gosselin from the reality TV show Jon & Kate Plus 8 is reportedly looking for an apartment in New York City, according to Star magazine. The apartment that the quietest member of the Gosselin family is considering happens to be in Manhattan’s Upper West Side, owned by Donald Trump. This bachelor pad isn’t going to be cheap – I wonder if he’s confident, he’ll be able to walk away with a sizable amount if he and wife Kate Gosselin divorce.

As mentioned before, the reality couple are going to be making “a major announcement” on Monday.

Things aren’t looking so good for the family sticking together as Jon is said to have spent Father’s Day without Kate. I don’t watch the show, but I’m tempted to tune in just for the announcement now.
